Introduction – the role of energy storage and the importance of subsidies

Energy storage facilities are becoming an integral part of modern energy systems based on renewable energy sources. Their role in increasing the energy independence of households and businesses cannot be overstated – they enable efficient energy management, storage, and utilization at the most optimal times. This not only enables better use of renewable energy but also stabilizes grid operation and reduces losses. Subsidies for energy storage facilities, offered by both the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management and EU programs, enable the widespread implementation of these technologies. Support programs cover not only energy storage facilities but also energy storage systems, support systems, and monitoring systems, which are crucial for safety and efficiency.

Available financial resources support investments in energy storage facilities, contributing to the development of sustainable infrastructure, environmental protection, and water management, as well as building a modern, secure energy sector in Poland. Investments also include infrastructure to improve stability and related infrastructure, including elements related to electricity and related infrastructure. Support also applies to energy storage facilities connected to the distribution grid at various voltage levels. The intensity of assistance, as well as the availability of support in the form of grants and loans, depends on the type of beneficiary and the program.

Advantages of energy storage – why is it worth investing?

Energy storage facilities are becoming increasingly popular among both individuals and businesses seeking to increase their energy independence. One of the key advantages of energy storage facilities is the ability to store electricity generated from renewable energy sources, such as photovoltaics or wind turbines. This allows users to use their own energy when they need it most, regardless of current production or weather conditions.

Investing in energy storage also reduces dependence on the electricity grid and the cost of purchasing energy during peak demand. Furthermore, energy storage plays a key role in stabilizing the electricity grid, which is particularly important in dynamically developing cities and industrial regions. It's also worth noting that energy storage can generate additional revenues – for example, by selling stored energy to the grid or participating in the capacity market. This makes energy storage not only an environmentally friendly solution but also a profitable investment for the future.

Criteria for selecting projects for funding

The National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management, implementing support programs for electricity storage facilities and related infrastructure to improve the stability of the Polish power grid, employs clearly defined criteria for selecting projects for funding. Primarily, the investment's impact on improving the stability of the Polish power grid and its potential to increase the country's energy independence are assessed. Reducing harmful emissions into the atmosphere is also an important aspect, which aligns with the goals of environmental protection and water management.

When evaluating applications, factors such as the project's technological advancement, the company's financial standing, and the investment's cost-effectiveness—that is, the ratio of costs to the generated power and storage capacity—are considered. Additionally, the project's compliance with the program's objectives and its impact on the development of associated infrastructure and energy storage facilities are analyzed. Projects that best address the need to improve grid stability and support the development of renewable energy sources have the greatest chance of receiving funding under the program.

The procedure for submitting an application for funding for an energy storage facility

Obtaining funding for an energy storage facility requires completing several key steps. First, the entrepreneur or investor prepares a funding application detailing the project—its purpose, scope, planned costs, and anticipated environmental impact and grid stability. The application must then be submitted electronically via the Funding Application Generator, available on the website of the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management.

After submitting an application, NFOŚiGW experts evaluate it to ensure it meets the criteria for selecting projects for funding. If the evaluation is positive, the next step is to sign a funding agreement between the applicant and the Fund. The entire funding application process has been designed to be as transparent as possible and accessible to all interested investors who wish to develop modern energy storage systems in Poland.
